True gender equality will only be achieved when women and men have equal access to the same opportunities regardless of gender or sex. This includes fair-pay and equal participation in government and society, as well as equal value and respect placed on the needs, characteristics and behaviors of all sexes.
With the recent proliferation of movements like ‘Lean In’ and #metoo, it may appear that topics related to women's empowerment and gender equality are finally getting the attention they deserve. However, true equality is still a long way off. In fact, according to the World Economic Forum, it will take 118 years to close the gender pay gap if the current development continues. Looking at this number, it is important that we question our own realities and challenge current norms.
